Is Tanzanite Ethically Sourced and Mined?

by Steve Moriarty January 20, 2025

Tanzanite is mined almost exclusively in a small area near Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. All tanzanite mining is controlled by the Tanzanian government with military guards.  They have built a 12 ft wall around the entire mining area so it is as ethical as any mining anywhere in the world.

Steve, Michael and Jeff Moriarty from TanzaniteJewelryDesigns.com have actually traveled to the mines multiple times. You can see details of their trip and the conditions of the mine and miners in the video here.

Here we talk to one of the mine owners.

Each tanzanite purchase supports the livelihoods of the Tanzanian people. Tanzanite mining provides the nearby Maasai tribe and local communities with improved living conditions and vital income opportunities.

The Benefits of Having the Mines Controlled by the Government

  • Tanzanite mining is a significant source of revenue for Tanzania, providing jobs and contributing to the local economy.
  • The Tanzanian government has implemented stricter regulations to control the mining and export of tanzanite, aiming to reduce smuggling and ensure that more of the profits benefit the local economy.
  • Some initiatives focus on supporting artisanal miners and ensuring fair wages and better working conditions.

As a family jewelry business, we are proud to adhere to the guidelines established by the Tucson Tanzanite Protocol. This protocol was created to enhance oversight in Tanzania and implement a system of downstream warranties, ensuring ethical practices throughout the entire journey of tanzanite from mine to market. Since its introduction, this protocol has significantly improved mining practices for tanzanite.

Our tanzanite is sourced from environmentally controlled areas, free from any association with war or terrorism. The mining process upholds safe working conditions for miners, fair labor practices for employees, and a transparent, ethical route to market. Tanzanite mining plays a vital role in supporting the Tanzanian economy, providing income and opportunities for thousands of people in the region.

Thank you,
